When North Branch juniors Jordan Fish and Catherine Brusie were in fourth grade, they had to attend their older sisters' volleyball matches, including tournaments that could last 10 hours. Bored with just watching, they often sneaked a ball into the hall and played pepper with each other.

And nearly as frequently, someone scolded them. "It was kind of like a game to us," said Fish, a setter. "We'd get yelled at, 'No balls in the hallway.' 'OK.' Then we'd run to a different hallway."

If they couldn't escape to another hall, they had to be water girls for the team. But they no longer have to hide in the shadows to play. The best friends led North Branch to the Class B state title this year and were named first-team all-state.

"Finally, it's our chance," Brusie said. "It's really cool that both of us are first team." Really cool once the players finally found out about their shared honor.

North Branch coach Jim Fish, Jordan's father, saw the all-state teams a week late because his region representative didn't e-mail him. Thankfully, his friend St. Louis coach Gary Stanglewicz, sent him the results. Jim called Brusie to congratulate her, and once the libero figured out why, she immediately told her family. Then, she texted Jordan to share in the good news.

Newbie Frenchman Brice Feillu took the stage win after a solid 6km solo break, Nocentini barely grabbed the Yellow Jersey and Cancellara fell off the back hard on the last climb…oh, and Contador jumped to earn second overall! So far…Best. Tour. Ever. Here’s how it happened:

On today’s 224km Tour de France Stage 7 from Barcelona to Andorre Arcalis, the first mountain top finish of the race, a nine rider lead pack broke away early, putting as much as a 12′08″ gap on the peloton at 56km to go. In the main field, Astana did a lot of the work, which is unusual for a team without a yellow jersey wearer…but it’s telling about who the peloton thinks has the eventual race winner.

Saxo Bank, meanwhile, did some of the work, but much of the time throughout the race sat comfortably mid-pack once their race leader, Fabian Cancellara, regained his momentum after a double flat on one of the early descents.

At 38K, the gap was still over 11′40″, which pretty much guaranteed the lead pack would produce the stage winner, while the peloton would be racing to produce (or maintain) a Yellow Jersey winner. Now it turns out that she didn’t stop there. She enlisted legislators up in Albany to draft a new law called “Bridget’s Law” that basically says that a parent cannot lose custody if they make a “good faith” effort to protect their kids. Says the New York Post:

Last year, the former Playboy pin-up, now 43, got state Assemblyman Jonathan Bing and Sen. Tom Duane (both D-Manhattan) to craft “Bridget’s Law,” which protects parents from being penalized in custody cases for making “good-faith efforts” to protect their kids from child abuse. It was signed into law by Gov. Paterson.

I agree that some women lie and they do so wantonly and maliciously and I am against that. But if a child comes home and says certain things a mother has to take precautions and err on the side of caution I think. And if it turns out to be the children’s imagination, or whatever, the mother should be held harmless.

I am for Bridget’s Law. Courts have to realize we live in a very crazy world. Things happen to kids. Just because you can’t prove it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. But the law should take a measured approach to protect the accused from malicious conduct by the accuser.

I remember a case in Queens where a mother from Afghanistan lost her kids to her husband because she took the children to the hospital after she claims they told her that daddy put his finger in their dunga. Well, the hospital saw no signs of the alleged abuse after examining both girls, 4 and 6. And the magistrate threw the book at this woman and took the kids and gave them to the father even though it wasn’t proven that he hadn’t done it. It just could not be proven that he had done it.

That law can’t come too soon. I am totally against bogus charges of molestation and stuff like that. But on the other hand, if a child comes home and tells his/her mother certain things and the parent takes action, I don’t think they should be penalized as harshly as many are, just because the charges turn out to be baseless.

LOS ANGELES: Well-known salsa dancer and TV performer Alex DaSilva was arrested Saturday on suspicion of four counts of sexual assault.

DaSilva, 41, was accused of sexually assaulting four dance students between May 2003 and March 28, 2009. Police say DaSilva, a professional choreographer, lured the women to his homes in North Hollywood and Van Nuys and used a ruse to get them into his bedroom where he allegedly raped them.

The dance instructor and choreographer is being held on $3.8 million bail.

A dancer and choreographer featured on the FOX television show "So You Think You Can Dance" was arrested Saturday on suspicion of sexually assaulting four of his dance students, police said.

Alex Da Silva, 41, a well-known salsa dancer who teaches at several Los Angeles dance studios, was taken into custody after teaching a class at a Hollywood studio and booked for investigation of sexual assault, Det. John Eum said.

Da Silva, who was being held on $3.8 million bail, is scheduled to make his first court appearance Tuesday.

Then on March 28, a fourth woman accused Da Silva of luring her to his home, using a ruse to get her into his bedroom and raping her. Detectives went back to interview the previous accusers, found similar accusations of being lured to Da Silva's bedroom and sexually assaulted by him, and reopened their cases.

"These four women don't know each other at all, yet their reports read basically the same," the detective said. He noted that one of the accusers was a minor at the time of the alleged assault.

"We're almost sure there are probably other victims out there and we hope they'll come forward," he said.

It wasn't immediately known whether the Brazilian-born Da Silva has retained an attorney. The voicemail for a phone number posted on his Web site was full and wouldn't accept messages.

Da Silva had been accused in 2003, 2004 and 2005 of sexually assaulting three women, but for unknown reasons prosecutors declined to file charges, Eum said.

SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea fired a rocket over Japan on Sunday, defying Washington, Tokyo and others who suspect the launch was cover for a test of its long-range missile technology. President Barack Obama said the move threatens the security of nations "near and far."

Liftoff took place at 11:30 a.m. (0230 GMT) from the coastal Musudan-ri launch pad in northeastern North Korea, the South Korean and U.S. governments said. The multistage rocket hurtled toward the Pacific, reaching Japanese airspace within seven minutes, but no debris appeared to hit its territory, officials in Tokyo said.

Four hours after the launch, North Korea declared it a success. An experimental communications satellite reached outer space in just over nine minutes and is orbiting Earth, the state-run Korean Central News Agency said from Pyongyang.

"The satellite is transmitting the melodies of the immortal revolutionary paeans 'Song of Gen. Kim Il Sung' and 'Song of Gen. Kim Jong Il' as well as measurement data back to Earth," it said, referring to the country's late founder and his son, its current leader.

Sunday's move was a bold act of defiance against Obama, Japanese leader Taro Aso, Hu Jintao of China and others who pressed North Korea in the days leading up to liftoff to cancel a launch they said would threaten peace and stability in Northeast Asia.

The U.N. Security Council approved an emergency session for Sunday afternoon in New York.

"North Korea has ignored its international obligations, rejected unequivocal calls for restraint and further isolated itself from the community of nations," Obama said in Prague, urging the North to honor the U.N. resolutions and to refrain from further "provocative" actions.

He called the move a clear violation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1718, which prohibits North Korea from conducting ballistic missile-related activities of any kind.

"North Korea broke the rules once again by testing a rocket that could be used for long-range missiles," he said. "Now is the time for a strong international response."

In Tokyo, Aso said the launch was "an extremely provocative act that cannot be overlooked."

China, North Korea's biggest source of economic aid and diplomatic support, urged all sides to maintain calm and exercise restraint. It offered to play a "constructive role," though some say it could use its veto power to block a unified response to the launch at the Security Council.

Russia, which shares a border with North Korea, also called for restraint.

"We urge all states concerned to show restraint in judgments and action in the current situation, and to be guided by objective data on the nature of North Korea's launch," a Foreign Ministry statement said.

North Korea says the launch of the "Kwangmyongsong-2" satellite was a peaceful bid to develop its space program.

But the U.S., South Korea, Japan and others suspect the launch was a guise for testing the regime's long-range missile technology — a step toward eventually mounting a nuclear weapon on a missile capable of reaching Alaska and beyond.

They contend it violates Resolution 1718, part of efforts to force North Korea to shelve its nuclear program and halt long-range missile tests.

Japan's U.N. mission immediately requested a meeting of the 15-nation council, spokesman Yutaka Arima said. Mexico, which holds the 15-nation council's presidency this month, set the meeting for 3 p.m. EDT (1900 GMT), spokesman Marco Morales said.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he regretted North Korea's move "against strong international appeal" at a time when nuclear disarmament talks involving six nations remain stalled.

"Given the volatility in the region, as well as a stalemate in interaction among the concerned parties, such a launch is not conducive to efforts to promote dialogue, regional peace and stability," Ban said in a statement from Paris.

At the United Nations, diplomats have begun discussing ways to affirm existing sanctions on North Korea. Envoys said permanent council members U.S., Britain and France are unlikely to secure agreement on new sanctions from veto holders Russia and China. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the discussions.

The European Union also "strongly" condemned the launch.

North Korea, which says its participation in a U.N. space treaty protects its right to send a satellite into orbit, took pains to alert international maritime and aviation authorities of the rocket's flight path, in marked contrast to 2006, when it carried out a surprise launch.

It was not immediately apparent if the rocket was mounted with a satellite as North Korea has claimed, Japan's chief Cabinet spokesman Takeo Kawamura said.

In Seoul, an unnamed government official told the Yonhap news agency the trajectory of the rocket suggests it was mounted with a satellite but said it was unclear whether it made it into orbit.

"Even if a satellite was launched, we see this as a ballistic missile test," Kawamura said.

The first stage of the rocket dropped about 175 miles (280 kilometers) off the western coast of Akita into the waters between Japan and the Korean peninsula. The second stage was aimed for the Pacific at a spot about 790 miles (1,270 kilometers) off Japan's northeastern coast, a Defense Ministry spokeswoman said in Tokyo.

South Korea, which technically remains at war with the North because their three-year conflict ended in 1953 in a truce rather than a peace treaty, put its forces on heightened alert.

North Korea, one of the world's poorest nations, is led with absolute authority by leader Kim Jong Il, who is poised to preside over the first session of the country's new parliament on Thursday. The appearance will be his first major public appearance since reportedly suffering a stroke last August.

Amid the controversy over the rocket launch, North Korea announced last week it would put two American reporters detained at the border with China on trial for allegedly entering the country illegally and engaging in "hostile acts."

Laura Ling and Euna Lee, reporters for former U.S. Vice President Al Gore's Current TV media venture, were seized by North Korean soldiers on March 17.

No attempt at interception was made because no debris fell onto its territory, Japan's Defense Ministry said.

However, Japan threatened to add more bilateral sanctions onto those it imposed after the July 2006 launch of a similar Taepodong-2 long-range missile that fizzled 42 seconds after takeoff.
